Summary

Kinvy is a family gatherings app. One person sets up Thanksgiving, the reunion or a birthday; everyone else gets a link, taps Yes, No or Maybe, votes on the time and claims a pie. Grandparents need no app and no password. We named it, designed the brand, built the web app and the site, and run it on our own server, all in one day.

The challenge

The plan for Thanksgiving lives in a group text nobody can find.

A family that gets together often runs on the same three questions every time: who is coming, what time, and who brings what. The answers get buried in a thread of forty messages, so the same person gets asked about the pies three times and Grandma never sees the address.

Most tools for this expect everyone to download an app, make an account and remember a password. The people who matter most at a family table are exactly the people who will not do that.

We wanted one place for the gathering that the organizer runs from a phone, that the rest of the family answers from a text, and that reads clearly to the oldest person in the room.

The approach

One link for everyone. Three jobs, nothing else.

  1. 01
    Grandma doesn't need an app.

The organizer sends one link by text. She opens it in her phone's browser, sees the gathering, taps Yes and types her name once. No account, no password, and each link shows just that one gathering. Family members can add Kinvy to their home screen if they want it to open like an app.

  2. 02
    RSVP, Decisions, Things to bring.

Yes, No or Maybe in one tap, with directions and parking notes on the same screen. A vote closes at a set time and the winner is waiting when it does. The bring list shows claim counts, so six pies never happen, and kids can claim the cupcakes themselves.

  3. 03
Built for the oldest person at the table.

Big text, big buttons, one thing per screen. The date is a tile you can read from across the kitchen, and the only question on an invite is "Are you coming?"

  4. 04
    Everyone picks their own look.

Bento, Arcade, Picnic or Heirloom. A teenager can run it in neon while Grandpa keeps it simple, because a look only changes Kinvy for you, never for the rest of the family.

  5. 05
Private, and on the fridge too.

No ads, no feeds, only the people you invite. Gatherings flow into Skylight, Apple Calendar and Google Calendar through one private calendar link, so the plan shows up where the family already looks.

It started the day as Kinboard and launched as Kinvy once that name turned out to be taken. The look is bright and plain: white, one grape, a tangerine for anything that needs a nudge, Manrope throughout, and photos of real families instead of illustration. Inside the app the brand steps back and the family member's own look takes over, so a Picnic home screen is red gingham and an Arcade one is black with blue.

The product

Four screens that get everyone to the table.

The invite, the home screen in four looks, the vote and the bring list, and the family itself. Every screen below is the real web app on a phone, signed in as the Ortiz family, the sample family that ships with the prototype.

01 · RSVP

Yes, No or Maybe. One tap.

The gathering is a date you can read from across the room, a count of who is going so far, the address with a Get Directions button and the parking note underneath. The only question on the screen is "Are you coming?" Share and Edit sit at the top for the organizer; everyone else just answers.

03 · Decisions and things to bring

Settle it with a vote. Six pies? Not this year.

A decision is one question with a few options and a closing time; the winner is waiting when it closes. The bring list shows each item with its claim count, who claimed it and how many are still needed, so the organizer never asks about the pies again. Both show up on the home screen as things waiting on you.

04 · Family and guests

Grandma doesn't need an app.

The family is a list of people with a role: Mom and Admin, Son and Organizer, Grandma and Member. Invite Relatives sends a link. A guest opens theirs in the phone's browser, reads the organizer's note, sees the date, the address and the parking, and answers. No account, no password, and the link shows only that one gathering.

Built to run

Our own server, a static site, one day from the first commit to launch.

  • StackOne Laravel app, phone and desktop

Built from a static prototype into a Laravel web app that works on a laptop and a phone, installs to the home screen as a PWA, and exposes an API v1, a calendar feed and the guest links. The marketing site at kinvy.app is static HTML.

  • HostingIts own DigitalOcean server

Set up the same way as KidNights, on a server we run. Nothing reaches it by hand: every release goes out through the deploy script, and only through the deploy script.

  • Pace14 commits, all on October 31, 2026

The name, the domains, the server, phase 1 of the app and the marketing site all landed on the same day. It started the morning as Kinboard and ended the day as Kinvy, because the first name was taken.

Where it stands

New. Live on the web, a native app later.

Kinvy launched on October 31, 2026 with a 14-day free trial on every plan. Basic is $6.99 a month for up to 8 family members and 5 upcoming gatherings at a time. Family is $9.99 a month for up to 25 members, unlimited gatherings, a photo on every gathering, date polls and one-tap reminders. Reunion is $17.99 a month. Yearly billing is two months free, prices are per family, and guests answering from a link never pay. A native app comes later, so there are no store badges yet.
